Visual Anatomy & Physiology combines a visual approach with a modular organization and frequent practice. Martini and Ober deliver an easy-to-use and time-efficient book that uniquely meets the needs of today’s students—without sacrificing the coverage of A&P topics required for careers in nursing and other allied health professions.

The visual approach breaks out of the text-heavy model that all other two-semester A&P textbooks follow. Instead of long columns of narrative text that refer to visuals, this book has visuals with brief “chunks” of text built around them. Students can’t read without seeing the corresponding visual, and they can’t look at a visual without reading. This book has true text-art integration.
The modular organization presents each chapter in two-page module spreads. The top left page begins with the module number and module title, the bottom right page ends with a set of self-check questions, and the text-art presentation fills the rest of the spread. These two-page spreads give students a predictable learning path. They also give students an efficient organization for managing their time as they can study each module during the limited time they have–ten minutes for one module now, ten minutes for another module later–checking off each module as they complete it. Within each chapter, related modules are organized into sections that begin with a section-opener page and conclude with a section-review page.
Frequent student practice is encouraged and supported throughout the book:
Module Reviews conclude each module with brief questions that check understanding of facts and concepts.
Section Reviews include a wide variety of “workbook-style” review activities–such as labeling and concept mapping activities—that ask students to recall and demonstrate their understanding of facts and concepts across several modules.
Chapter Reviews include two sections. In the Visual Outline with Key Terms, every module contains an image to remind students of key concepts, a statement of the key teaching points, and a list of terms to help students review the content of the module. The Chapter Integration presents clinical applications of the chapter material in a friendly story format followed by critical thinking questions.
Learning Outcomes on the chapter-opening page correspond by number to the chapter modules, giving students an easy learning path and instructors an easy vehicle for assessment. The learning outcomes are derived from the learning outcomes recommended by the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS).
Clinical material is given prominent attention in two-page modules, on par with the other chapter modules, rather than in the less important “sidebars” of other two-semester A&P books.
